Coroner Warns Of Importance Of Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Cork City Coroner has issued a warning about the importance of carbon monoxide alarms.

He made the comments at the inquest into the death of Jack Mahony, a pensioner,  who died following a fire at his home in Dillons Cross just days before Christmas.

His nephew told the court that the 74-year-old was a heavy smoker who lived alone.

The court also that the source of the fire was identified as an area in the middle of the living room where there had been a collection of refuse including paper, plastic and cardboard.

The Garda  Scenes of Crime Examiner said the most likely cause of the fire was either a lighting cigarette or lit cigarette butt falling into the material and igniting it and set the area aflame.

Dr Margaret Bolster said carbon monoxide levels of 31% were found in his blood stream which proved fatal as he also suffered from lung disease and coronary artery disease.

Cork City Coroner Philip Comyn  returned a verdict of accidental death following carbon monoxide poisoning due to a house fire.
