Cost Of Cork's Flood Barrier Under The Spotlight

The Save Cork City group met with councillors at City Hall yesterday to present their proposals for flood relief Leeside

The cost of building a tidal barrier as an alternative to the current proposals for Corks' Flood relief scheme would not be prohibitive.

That's according to the Save Cork City group who met with councillors at City Hall yesterday to present their proposals for flood relief Leeside.

The Office of Public Works have previously stated that building a tidal barrier as an alternative to the €140 million euro Flood Relief scheme would cost up to €1bn

The OPW have stressed the project is in keeping with the cultural and heritage aspects of the city, which includes a rise in embankments and quay walls along the river Lee.

However the Save Cork City campaign say they have identified an alternative location for a tidal barrier at Great Island and have costed it at €190 million.

Speaking to RedFM News Save Cork City Campaigner Sean O'Muiri says their plans will not cost anything near the figures being reported:
