Council engineers have been dispatched to Rosscarbery after a section of the pier collapsed yesterday

The road has been closed due to safety reasons to allow engineers conduct a detailed assessment

It's believed coastal erosion is the cause for the partial collapse of the pier, although it's known that the section which collapsed was built with no foundation

The pier is recognised as a key piece of coastal infrastructure and is popular with walkers so locals are hopeful that it will be quickly restored once the damage has been assessed and the Council formulate a repair plan
