Council Urged To Clamp Down On Landlords

There are calls for the city council to clamp down on landlords who fail to comply with housing standards. The council’s building control unit inspected a total of 2,466 properties between 2010 and 2012. And it's emerged that almost half of this privately rented accommodation failed to meet the basic housing standards. The most common breaches were failure to provide smoke alarms or inadequate ventilation in certain rooms which can contribute to chronic dampness. The council is now being urged to protect tenants and to make sure landlords across the city adhere to housing standards.
