Councillor to meet gardaí after Clonakilty assault

A Finel Gael Councillor who was attacked in West Cork over the weekend is expected to make a full statement to gardaí this evening. Councillor Humphrey Deegan was assaulted in Clonakilty while out canvassing on Friday. The incident occurred at around 4.30pm on Connolly Street in Clonakilty while Humphrey Deegan was canvassing for his party colleague. The Fine Gael Councillor said a car pulled up and a man started shouting abuse before getting out of the vehicle. His leaflets were knocked to the ground and a woman that was with the man proceeded to tear them up and spit on them. Humphrey Deegan claims he was forced to restrain the man against a car in which he sustained scrawl marks on his face that drew blood. The gardaí were called to the scene and Humphrey Deegan attended his local GP after being advised to get his face attended to.
