County Council's housing allocation policy under the spotlight
A Fine Gael Councillor has defended comments she made in relation to Cork County Council's housing allocation policy. Deirdre Forde claims that the policy is sending a message to mothers to have as many children as you can if you want to get a council house. Cllr Forde says there is a particular problem finding social housing for mothers with one or two children as mothers with more children will invariably be housed first. A senior council housing officer, said all houses were allocated in line with the Scheme of Letting Priorities which takes into account waiting time on the list, family size, type of house, and area of preference. However she acknowledged that the majority of council properties were three-bed houses which would likely be allocated to larger families.
