Debate over council merger continues

It follows an announcement by the Environment Minister that he agrees with the recommended amalgamation of Cork city and county councils.

The debate over the merger of Cork City and County Councils rumbles on, with a split in the Labour party over the issue the latest installment in the debacle.

Labour TD Ciarán Lynch says the acceptance of the findings by the review group were rushed by the Environment Minister and whole process needs to be re-examined.

The chairman of the Oireachtas banking inquiry also published the findings of his own survey of his constituents who would be affected by the move.

The results of his findings reveal that the majority would prefer a boundary extension as opposed to a merger of both councils.

These were also the sentiments of two members of the review group, one of whom this week warned a merger would lead to a loss of funding and focus on policies and services.

Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show however chair of the review group Alf Smiddy said he's willing to meet with politicians and business leaders to talk through proposals however changing the recommendation is not on the agenda.
