Decline of nurses in the public health service

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation are calling to lift the embargo on the recruitment of front-line staff positions
There has been a dramatic drop in numbers of nurses in the public health service.
That's according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation who say up to 70 nursing posts remain vacant at Cork University Hospital.
They are calling on the Department of Health to intervene and to lift the embargo on the recruitment of front-line staff positions.
Figures from the HSE show that in the past nine years there are now over 3,000 less nursing posts available in Ireland.
The INMO say there is increasing demand for public health services and some of the 15 hundred graduating nurses will be forced to seek employment abroad because they will not be offered positions here.
Speaking to RedFM News INMO Director of Industrial Relations, Phil Ni Sheaghdha says, the HSE will have to resort to agency staff at a high cost to the state.
