Delay in the re-development of the former Capitol cinema site

It comes as an appeal has been lodged to An Bord Pleanála.

An appeal has been lodged to An Bord Pleanála over the plans for the re-development of the former Capitol Cinema site.

Work was due to begin in the coming weeks to demolish the cinema on Grand Parade and replace it with a new retail and office building however an appeal has been lodged to the City Council's decision to grant permission for the new development.

The new building, was due to open for business at the beginning of 2017 with major retailers expected to take up position as anchor tenants along with the creation of a new food hub connected to the English Market.

City Hall planners granted permission last month, however that decision has now been appealed to An Bord Pleanála which can take up to four months meaning construction will not now begin until early in the New Year.

Fishmonger at the English Market Pat O'Connell told the Neil Prendeville Show that he is unsurprised by the appeal and he still expects the development to go ahead.
