Detectives To Resume Questioning Man Over Cork Murder

Detectives are this morning set to resume questioning a man about the fatal assault of a mother of three in the city in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Gardai upgraded their investigation into the death of Nicola Collins to a murder investigation after receiving the results of a post-mortem yesterday afternoon which showed that the 39-year-old suffered serious head injuries during a fatal assault.

Emergency services were called to a flat over a convenience store on Pophams Road in Farranree by a man who was living in the flat at around 3.30am yesterday.

She was pronounced dead by medics at the scene and a 42 year old man was arrested at the sene for questioning.

The man, who is originally from Charleville in North Cork, was taken to Mayfield Garda Station but a doctor certified he was not fit to be questioned at that point and questioning was delayed until 12 noon yesterday when the interview began.

The victim who is originally from Tralee had been living in Togher and was visiting the flat on Popham's Road at the time.

Gardai technical experts carried out a forensic examination of the scene and gardai began door to door inquiries in the area and also began examining CCTV footage from shops in the area.

Gardai are satisfied that there was no sign of forced entry into the flat and say they are not looking for anyone else other than the arrested man in relation to the fatal assault on Ms Collins.
