Downpours continue across Cork this afternoon, local authorities say the worst might not yet be over

An Orange rainfall warning will remain in place into tonight, and City Council say further river flooding could occur between 7pm and 10pm after river levels rise in response to further rainfall.  

A number of fallen trees, road closures and flooding have been reported across Cork but both Cork City and County Councils say for the most part properties have escaped damage so far. 

Excess surface water is being reported across the county, in Mallow, Macroom and on the Cloyne to Ladysbridge road.

Power outages are also being reported in the Carrigtwohill area where 123 people are off the grid. 

Padraig Barrett, Director of Services, Roads & Transportation with Cork County Council, says conditions may worsen as the day goes on; "we're expecting more rain to fall and, unfortunately, the worst isn't over because the slow river catchments respond, there's a lag to their response time from the rainfall if you take the river Lee, for example, the water that falls in the catchment west of the city will arrive to the city six hours after  the peak of the rainfall so the flood peak is six to eight hours after that. So that will happen later today. "
