Dr Woodworth: At Least 6 Weeks Before HSE's Systems Working Properly Again - Even If Decryption Key Works

Cyber security experts will continue to assess a decryption code this weekend to see if it will unlock stolen HSE data

The Taoiseach says it is 'slow work' after the criminal gang involved in the ransomware attack provided the key on Thursday evening.

Thousands of hospital appointments will be cancelled again next week - including outpatient consultations countrywide.

Dr Simon Woodworth is a lecturer in business information systems in UCC, and a cyber security expert.

He says it'll be at least six weeks before the HSE's systems are working properly again - even if the decryption key works:

"Bear in mind that the HSE has a large number of complex systems numbered in the thousands, and they need to go through every one and make sure it's actually be okay before they sign it back over to be involved in clinical care. So, I would guess six weeks at the moment before anything is anyway normal and I suspect there'll be knock on effects beyond that, in making sure the systems are secure in the future."
