Education Minister says demands on the system has lead to a delay on Leaving Certificate results

The Education Minister says the results of the Leaving Cert won’t be available until September because of demands on the system.

They're due out on Friday September 3rd, but the Labour Party says mid-August would be more practical.

This year students can opt to sit the exams, take accredited grades or a combination of both.

Norma Foley says this will lead to a delay in issuing the results.

"We're unique in offering an opportunity for two processes to run simultaneously.

"That is a considerable demand being placed on the state examinations commission."

There are concerns the results will be out too close to college starting.

However Higher Education Minister Simon Harris doesn’t believe it will impact too much.

"We need to get this right. We need one set of results issued, and only one set, not what happened last year.

"I'm working with the colleges now. No student will miss out on their start date, no student will miss out on their offer, and in fact students will get their results and their offers earlier than they got last year."
