Elderly couple in North Cork crash named

A community in North Cork has been left reeling after an elderly couple from the area were killed in a two car collision on the main Cork-Limerick road just north of Mallow town yesterday evening.
76-year-olds Con and Mary McCarthy from Buttevant were fatally injured in the two car collision which happened just north of the entrance to Mallow General Hospital at around 5pm.
The husband and wife were both pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other car, a woman in her late 20s, was uninjured and was treated for shock at the scene.
The road was closed to facilitate a garda forensic crash investigator and the bodies of the elderly couple were removed to Cork University Hospital where post-mortems are due to be carried out today.
Gardaí have appealed to anyone travelling the road who may have seen the collision to contact Mallow Garda Station on 022-31450.
The fatalities bring to nine the number of people killed in road traffic collisions on Cork roads this year.
