Emily O'Reilly elected new Ombudsman for the EU

Ireland's Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly has been elected the new Ombudsman for the entire European Union - marking the first time a woman has held the position. She defeated a Dutch opponent by securing the support of 359 MEPs in Strasbourg this morning. She will now take up the job immediately to complete the remainder of her predecessor's five-year term, which runs until the end of 2014.
