ESB warns of possible flooding in Cork

The ESB is warning of possible flooding downstream from its Hydro -electric dam in County Cork, as it deals with a high level of water in the River Lee.

The company says the weekend of heavy rain is forcing it to release 180 tonnes of water per second from the dam at Inniscara.

As a result, there may be associated flooding of roads, land and property.

However, the level of release is significantly lower than that which caused widespread flooding in Cork city in November 2009.

The ESB says it is "closely monitoring the situation".
