ESRI report says 95% of people on PUP would be better off in employment

95% of people receiving the Pandemic Unemployment Payment would be better off in employment, according to a new report.
The ESRI says income losses throughout the current crisis would have been twice the rate recorded if it wasn't for the governments social welfare supports.
However the study did find the PUP reduced work incentives for the newly unemployed.
Cork TD Mick Barry told RedFM News work needs to be provided to reduce the numbers on PUP.
"For the last few weeks we have heard constant comment from the representatives from some employer organisations to the effect that workers are better off on the PUP, and supports need to be slashed in order to get back to work.
"This ESRI report undermines that argument.
"It is clear that the way to reduce the amount of money being spent on PUP is to provide work - not to cut the payments."
