Essential eye detection equipment remains out of service at CUH

It's emerged that equipment need to detect and monitor a disease which causes blindness has remained out of service for the past month in Cork University Hospital.

The Irish Examiner reports that the breakdown of the visual fields analyser in the ophthalmic department has led to the deferral and cancellation of a number of appointments.

It comes in the wake of a letter by surgeons in the department to hospital management where concerns were expressed about the risk of eye patients attending CUH losing vision because of appointment delays.

The CUH said at the begining of March they expected the replacement equipment to arrive by mid March.

The hospital has also issued a statement to say it's in the process of examining options to manage waiting lists and these include the option of retaining the services of a community ophthalmologist in reviewing patients from the waiting list.
