Extension added to Cork to US route process

The transatlantic route has hit a number of delays in recent month.

A 10-day extension has been added to the US Department of Transportation's consultation process on the planned Cork transatlantic link.

Norwegian Air International has been waiting for two years for the green light on a US foreign air carrier permit to operate the routes, and last month tentative approval for the licence was granted.

However further delays are now expected with opposition by some labour unions in the US, US legacy airlines and four US Congressmen who introduced a bill to block the issuing of the permit.

Concern has been expressed Leeside that the flights may not get approval and as well as efforts by Cork Chamber to get the flights over the line, the European Commission is to initiate arbitration under the EU-US Open Skies agreement.

Speaking to RedFM News Niall McCarthy Managing Director at Cork Airport believes the airlink will take off in the Autumn as planned.
