"Fatberg" Causes Blockage And An Emergency Overflow On The Grand Parade Last Week

Fatbergs are caused by pouring hot fats, oils and grease down the kitchen sink and when cooled they form solid masses
Irish Water has revealed that an emergency overflow from the public waste water network on the Grand Parade last week was caused by a fat blockage in the sewer network
The blockage, known as a "fat berg" is caused by pouring hot fats, oils and grease down the kitchen sink, however when they cool they form solid masses, which can cause serious pipe blockages and sewer flooding, resulting in property damage and harm to the environment.
Engineers from Irish Water and the City Council removed the fat berg using a jet vacuum and are implementing a number of preventative measures such as sewer jetting and cleaning on Grand Parade and Washington Street until the end of the August in an effort to clear the network of fat bergs
They're also appealing to businesses and the wider community in Cork City to assist their operational teams in their work and 'Think Before You Pour' fats, oils and greases into the drains of homes and businesses.
