The €11 million euro project is beginning with repair to the pedestrian bridge and construction of new flood defence walls in the town.
Up to 400 properties have been affected from severe flooding over the past few years, and locals have welcomed the fact the contract has now been awarded...
Dredging of the Bandon river will not take place until next year, due to remedial works that must be carried out beforehand.
Speaking to RedFM News Gillian Powell from the Bandon Flood Group says the people of Bandon are prepared to put up with difficult conditions while work is taking place:
