Food Relief Scheme Up For Discussion In Leinster House

Cork's flood relief scheme is to be discussed at Leinster House this lunchtime by the Heritage & Gaeltacht Committee.

The committee will meet in the next half an hour to examine the plans to provide flood defences put forward by the Office of Public Works

The plans call for flood defences along the River Lee downstream of Inniscarra dam and through Cork city but there has been some opposition to this with groups such as Save Cork City recommending the installation of a tidal barrier at a cost of €140 million

However the OPW says the tidal barrier would not protect the city from fluvial flooding

Speaking to RedFM News Ezra McManamon of the OPW says the tidal barrier would also cost more than the total budget earmarked for the entire project
