Foreign Affairs Minister And Cork TD Simon Coveney To Keep State Car And Garda Driver
The Irish Independent reports that Minister Coveney will retain the security service he received as Tánaiste
The paper reports that it's after the Department of the Taoiseach Secretary General Martin Fraser intervened to seek a state car and a driver for Minister Coveney.
Former Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan did not have a Garda security detail, however the Department of Justice said that Garda Commissioner Drew Harris had given his approval for Minister Coveney to retain the €200,000 a year detail.
Labour TD Alan Kelly says any request originating from the Office of the Taoiseach for a Minister to keep a Garda security detail, would have left Senior Gardaí in a difficult position and he has raised questions about why cabinet was not required to sign off on the plan.
