Free education should be free according to ASTI

They're calling for the restoration of general funding to schools at their annual conference in Cork.

The union says that cuts imposed since 2008 have led to a funding crisis at some schools as well as an increased pupil-teacher ratio.

Over 450 teachers are due to attend the conference over the next three days with the Education Minister to address the conference later this afternoon

Delegates will debate topics including equal pay and pensions, teacher retention, education reform and funding.

Speaking to RedFM News, Deputy General Secretary of the ASTI Diarmuid de Paor says the situation needs to change.
