Garda Commissioner Apologises To Victims Of Domestic Abuse Who Didn't Receive Correct Standard Of Care

Drew Harris is appearing before the Policing Authority to answer questions about 999 calls that weren’t acted on properly
Stephanie Rohan reports for RedFM, from Garda Headquarters in Dublin:
"In total 3,120 domestic violence emergency calls, which were marked as cancelled, were looked at as part of this internal review.
Of those a third had a valid reason for being cancelled, like a number of neighbours had made different 999 calls about the same incident.
But 45 per cent of the calls have been sent to garda divisions for further investigation.
So far 10 per cent of the victims have been contacted.
The Garda Commissioner has apologised to the victims affected – which he described as among the most vulnerable people in society.
Drew Harris said regrettably in some cases it appears gardai didn’t provide the standard of care that is required.
This is only an interim report and the Garda Commissioner said they are working to determine the exact extent of the issue.
