Detectives say the man answered a knock on the front door of his apartment at Water Edge Apartments in the town just before 9pm and was confronted by a man he didn't know who demanded cash..
His face was partially covered by a light coloured hat and scarf, but he's been described as Eastern European, of stocky build and was approximately 6 feet tall..
He struck the elderly man, injuring him in the face and head and forced his way into the building
Detective Sergeant Sean Leahy of Midleon Gardai told RedFM News that the man left on foot when the man's wife appeared in the hallway.
