Gardaí launch investigation after Cork man was scammed out of thousands of euro worth of Bitcoin

The Echo reports the man met someone on an online dating site who convinced him she needed money for a personal emergency. 

The scammer directed to man to a Bitcoin ATM in the City where the cryptocurrency could be sent when he was unable to send the money via Western Union. 

Gardaí in Cork are urging people to be very cautious when meeting people online.

They say people lose an average of €20,000 to romance scams.
