Gardaí Launch Investigation Into Attack On Prison Officer

Gardaí have launched an investigation after a prison officer was attacked and knocked unconscious while on escort duty at the Washington St Courthouse yesterday.

The officer in his 50s was escorting prisoners into the cells in the courthouse for the first day of the Circuit Criminal Court sittings when a 36-year-old prisoner suddenly turned on him and attacked him.

The prisoner hit the prison officer with a punch straight to the head which knocked him unconscious before colleagues of the injured officer were able to restrain and contain the prisoner.

The prison officer regained consciousness but he was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where it's understood that he was detained overnight as a precautionary measure.

Investigating gardaí are planning to speak to the injured offider and other prison officers who were part of the escort detail before interviewing the prisoner.

An Irish Prison Service spokesman confirmed they are investigating the incident and said any disciplinary measures that needed to be taken on foot of their investigation would be taken.
