Gardaí probe attack on pensioner

The incident happened on Monday night at 9.30pm on St Paul's Avenue.

Gardaí are continuing to question a 29-year-old man about an attack on a pensioner in the city this week.

The suspect was arrested at the Bus Eireann station in Parnell Place at around 3.30pm yesterday in connection with the attack on the 82-year-old.

The incident happened on Monday night at 9.30pm on St Paul's Avenue near Paul St when the Blarney pensioner was accosted as he made his way back to his car.

He was punched in the head and after being knocked to the ground was repeatedly kicked as he tried to protect himself.

The attacker fled on foot and the pensioner managed to raise the alarm and was taken to the Mercy University Hospital where he was treated for bruises and lacerations to the face and body.

Gardaí are examining CCTV footage, and are appealing to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious to contact the Bridewell garda station on 021 -4943330.

The assault is the second such attack in the city centre in the space of three days and follows an unrelated and separate attack on a pregnant Latvian woman.
