Gardaí Say Organised Begging In The City Has Eased

The problem was raised by traders before Christmas
A number of people have been before the courts since the end of the year and were fined or jailed for begging related offences following a garda clampdown on the problem.
Gardaí say the fact that there are less people on the streets and less money around has led to a natural reduction in the number of people out begging..
Before Christmas the President of Cork Business Association Pat O'Connell expressed his concern, saying it appeared to be very organised with one set begging and then others collecting from them.
Traders estimated that up to 16 people were involved in the operation, primarily men.
Speaking to RedFM News Pat O'Connell says some of those involved were quite aggressive
