Gardai To Tackle Drug Driving

The growing problem of drug-driving has prompted the Government to grant new powers to gardaí. Under the proposed legislation, Gardaí will also be able to take blood samples from unconscious drivers at the scene of an accident. While officers await suitable machines to detect drug use, they will be able to carry out impairment tests on suspected drivers by the roadside these include; walking in a straight line or hand/eye co-ordination movements to gauge their status. It's hoped the new rules which will be unveiled by the Transport Minister Leo Varadkar later today will help reduce the number of deaths on our roads.
