Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney is believed to be the frontrunner however FG MEPs Frances Fitzgerald and Mairead McGuinness have both confirmed they are interested in the position.
The President of the European Commission has asked the government to nominate a man and a woman for consideration.
