Home tutors express difficulties with employment status

They claim they are having difficulty getting clarification on the issue.
Home tutors teaching children with special needs say they cannot get clarification in relation to their employment status.
Tutors say up to September they were classed as self-employed, however the Revenue Commissioners ordered the Department of Education to treat them
as PAYE workers but the Department of Social Protection insists they remain self-employed.
This means the tutors, who are not members of a teachers union, are barred from holiday and sick pay and other benefits.
The confusion left some tutors without pay for six weeks over Christmas and others were taxed at the high emergency rate which they can not claim back because they have no employer to issue them a P60.
Tutors say it's also impossible to get bank loans and mortgage approval.
Elaine O'Dwyer is a tutor based in North Cork and she told RedFM News says that despite making the Ombudsman aware of their predicament they are still in limbo.
