Homeless man remanded in custody following city centre robbery

He was charged in connection with the mugging on Lower Oliver Plunkett Street over the Christmas period.

26 year old Simon Quilligan who is living in the Simon Community was charged with robbery of a pair of Beats Headphones worth €300 from a foreign national on December 27th.

Gardai gave evidence of his arrest, charge and caution at the Cork District Court where they objected to his bail due to the seriousness of the charge.

The courst heard that Mr Quilligan approaced the injured party who had come out of a hotel for a cigarette and asked him for a light before punching him in the head and stealing the headphones.

The state would allege that the accused fled the scene and was pursued by the injured party who confronted him on Morrison's Island where he suffered further injuries.

Mr Quilligan was confronted by an off duty detective and threw the headphones into the River Lee before he was arrested a short time afterwards.

He remains in custody and is due to appear again before Cork District Court on January 5th.
