Cork Simon say the increase in the numbers sleeping rough is having an impact on their service.

A Cork charity for the homeless says bringing the rent cap in line with market rents would alleviate the homelessness crisis in Ireland.

Cork Simon say the spike in homelessness has put pressure on their service and say they crisis in the housing market is central to the problem.

Leeside, the charity say they have seen an average of 12 people sleeping rough every night in Cork in July which is an increase of 45% on June of this year and is a trend they say has continued into the first week of August.

The comments come as Anti Austerity Alliance TD Ruth Coppinger says tenants should refuse to leave a property, if the alternative is becoming homeless.

She says people should keep paying rent, but should inform their landlord if they have nowhere else to go and refuse to move out.

Speaking to RedFM News, Cork Simon's Paul Sheehan says bringing the rent cap in line with market rents could work towards alleviating the problem.
