Homelessness on the rise Leeside

Figures from Cork Simon show an increase in the numbers accessing their services.

Cork Simon says 76 people slept rough in the city last month.

The homeless charity says they have seen a 9% increase in the number of people they supported sleeping rough between January and March of this year in comparison to the same period in 2015.

The figures come as the chairman of the new Dáil cross party committee on housing and homelessness has been outlining the tough task that lies ahead.

Fianna Fáil's John Curran was elected chair of the committee which has been given just nine weeks to come up with solutions and issue a report.

He says he has invited Minister Alan Kelly to attend the committee but hasn't yet had a response.
