Hopes increasing city population will tackle chain brand fears

The comments come on foot of the Friendly Business Awards initiative.
It's hoped a growing population Leeside will combat the threat it's feared chain brands pose to the unique identity of the city centre.
Earlier this year some Cork businesses voiced their opposition to chain brands such as StarBucks and British pub chain Wetherspoons opening in the city centre.
However Cork Business Association moved to allay fears and told RedFM that international chain brands are needed in the city to increase footfall.
It's hoped initiatives such as the Friendly Business Awards which are geared towards small business in Cork and promote the value they bring to our local communities will help to maintain the unique identity of the city.
Speaking to RedFM News Brian Dry-nan of Perry St Market Café, which has been named Cork’s Friendliest Business, says there's pros and cons of chain brands locating in the city centre.
