Household mixing and dining in restaurants over the Christmas period are being pinpointed as the main causes for the growing numbers of Covid-19

The national 14 day incidence rate is estimated to be at 582 per 100 thousand people.

6,110 new cases of the virus including 291 in Cork were confirmed last night - the highest since the pandemic began.

Kacey O'Riordan has this report for RedFM News

"The record-breaking daily case numbers has left many asking, how did we get here?

Professor of Genetics at Trinity College Dublin Aoife McLysaght says the Government's people pleasing decisions in December have led to the current situation.

1 in 20 residents of a county Waterford town alone are reportedly infected with Covid-19.

Tramore GP Dr Austin Byrne says there's an element of finger pointing locally but he says the local cases have come from discreet clustering super spreading events at several  different occasions where people met in enclosed spaces.

Meanwhile

Some counties are struggling more than others with Monaghan and Louth experiencing a 14 day incidence rate of over 1000 cases per 100 thousand people.

The lowest rates are in Wicklow and Tipperary with 273 and 288 cases per 100 thousand respectively"
