Men Who Save Mother And Children From Sinking Car In River Lee Hailed Heroes

The men who dived into the Lee close to the Port of Cork’s city quays to save a mother and her two children from a sinking car have been hailed heroes.
The incident happened at around 8 o'clock on Saturday evening.
It's understood that the woman, her sons and their family pet were parked above a disused slipway at Lower Castleview Terrace opposite their home.
The Irish Examiner reports the father returned to their house to get something and as his family waited in the car it jumped forward before landing on an algae-covered slipway where it entered the water at high tide.
The father heard the commotion and ran across the road and dived straight in. He was assisted by two men, a passer-by and a neighbour who both jumped in.
Onlookers formed a human chain and waded out knee-deep to assist in carrying the children back to safety.
Emergency services arrived minutes later and the mother, her children and one of the rescuers were taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment and observation.
