Hundreds gather to protest against CIT merger

The demonstration took place in the city last night.
Hundreds of people took part in a protest last night against the merger of CIT and Institute of Technology Tralee.
Lecturers who are members of the Teachers Union of Ireland say the merger will result in a loss of choice for students, loss of lecturing jobs and incur massive costs.
Education Minister Jan O'Sullivan was in the city last night and met with concerned TUI members of CIT who raised their concerns about the speed of the Technological Universities Bill is going through the Dail and the cutbacks in funding and services for CIT students.
The Bill aims to merge the two Institutes of Technologies and establish a Munster Technological University however lecturers say university status is not a guarantee and they're worried about rationalisation and loss of courses.
One day of strike action is already planned for the 3rd of February next.
Speaking to Cork's RedFM CIT Lecturer Dr Tom O'Connor outlined the impact the move could have on Cork students.
