INMO: staff and patients forced to deal with “hazardous conditions” in hospital Emergency Departments

The union has written to the HSE calling for an emergency meeting of the Emergency Department Taskforce to tackle to the level of overcrowding.
The INMO’s daily trolley watch figures show that Cork University Hospital is the most overcrowded ED in the county today with 42 people on trolleys.
The union say the number of patients being forced to wait on trolleys is increasing despite the continued risk of Covid transmission in hospitals.
Over 22,000 patients have been treated on trolleys so far this year, 2,800 of those were this month- almost double the amount for the same time last year.
INMO General Secretary Phil Ni Sheaghdha says no meaningful action has been taken to combat the overcrowding crisis and says the HSE need a concrete plan, citing highly transmissible variants and a completely exhausted workforce.
CUH is warning of long delays in the ED and is asking anyone with less urgent needs to explore all available options before presenting at the department.
