Intel to reduce workforce by 12,000

It it not clear yet which plants will be affected.

Intel Ireland says it has yet to decide which of its multiple plants worldwide will be affected by 12,000 job cuts.

The American chipmaker - one of Ireland's largest employers - has announced a restructuring programme aimed at making it less dependent on the personal computing market

The firm currently employs around 5,500 people in Ireland - 4,500 of those workers are at its R&D facility in Leixlip and the remainder are spread across its security business in Cork and its research and development labs in Shannon.

In a statement this morning Intel Ireland says it can't provide site specific information as of yet  - but that the global job losses are expected to come in the form of voluntary and involuntary departures between now and mid 2017.

Technology expert Adrian Weckler says Ireland is unlikely to be badly hit by the cuts.
