Investigation into online abuse of Youghal councillors

Gardaí have launched an investigation after two Youghal based councillors were the victims of online abuse. A fake Facebook user targeted Independent County Councillor Mary Linehan Foley and Fianna Fáil Councillor Aaron O’Sullivan by comparing them to what's been described as crude imagery of apes in the online attack. It comes as tensions in the town were heightened recently when objections were lodged to An Bord Pleanála about permission granted to a consortium for a supermarket at the former Seafield Fabrics factory, which is something many residents say is needed to secure the future of Youghal. Following much debate about the planning objection, a petrol bomb was thrown into a house in the town and Gardaí suspect it may be linked to the contentious issue.
