Investigation Launched After Discovery Of Man's Body In City Centre This Lunchtime

Gardaí have requested the services of the State Pathologist's Office following the discovery of the body of a man in his late 40s not far from Cork city centre shortly before lunch hour today.

The body of the man was found by a pedestrian out walking in the Distillery complex at the top of the North Mall adjacent to the north channel of the River Lee and the emergency services were alerted.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and gardai immediately set about sealing off the area to facilitate a forensic examination of the scene by local garda technical experts from Gurranebraher.

It's unclear at this stage whether the man had suffered any injuries but it's understood that he was found lying face down and gardai have requested the services of the State Pathologist's Office.

Dr Margaret Bolster, who was conducting a post-mortem at Cork University Hospital on human remains found in fishing nets off the Cork coast is on her way to the scene and is due there shortly.

Gardai have begun gathering CCTV footage from the North Mall and Mardyke areas to try and see if they can trace the last known movements of the man who is from the Mayfield area of Cork's northside.
