Ireland's direct provision system will come to an end in 2024, according to a new report published today

The Department of Equality says all existing centres will be closed on a phased basis over the next four years.

Under a new system, asylum-seekers will stay in a reception centre for no more than four months - and then get their own accommodation in the community.

Minister for Equality, Roderic O'Gorman, says the new system will be fully operational by December 2024:

"The white paper today marks a new beginning in Ireland's approach to meeting the needs of people who come here to seek protection. It's going to bring an end to the existing system of direct provision, and it's going to set out a new policy on the accommodation and the supports that will be offered to people seeking international protection or asylum, and new supports offered by the state while they await a decision on their claim here in Ireland."
