Irish Blood Transfusion Service appealing for blood donations in Cork after they were forced to import blood from UK

The service does occasionally import a small number of rare blood unit, however its the first time they have imported blood in bulk since the late 1990s
115 units of O, A and B negative blood are leaving Manchester today after the service activated its contingency arrangement with their counterpart in England.
Speaking to RedFM News, CEO of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service Orla O'Brien outlines what led to the shortage:
"In recent weeks, due to both combination I suppose of the summertime, the easing of the public health restrictions, the Euros and so on. We have had a decline in attendance and it has been more difficult to get people to attend for all of our clinics, and as a result, the knock on effect of that is that some of our blood groups are lower than we would be comfortable with. We took the decision to import a small amount of blood."
