Johnson Speaks To Taoiseach For First Time Since Becoming British PM

The pair have spoken over the phone about issues such as the backstop and the Withdrawal Agreement

The Taoiseach has told the British Prime Minister in their first phone call today that the backstop is necessary as part of a Brexit agreement. 

Leo Varadkar and Boris Johnson have spoken for the first time  - 6 days after he became UK leader.  

The Taoiseach reiterated the EU stance that the Withdrawal Agreement could not be reopened -  Johnson said the UK will leave the EU on October 31st no matter what. 

He added the UK government is committed to the Belfast Agreement and will never put physical checks on the border. 

Leo Varadkar invited Boris Johnson to Dublin and the two leaders agreed to stay in contact.
