LATEST: Cork City and County Council on high alert for flooding this morning following heavy rain overnight

An orange rainfall warning is in place for Cork until 9pm with up to 80 millimetres forecast in places.

A yellow wind is also in place for the entire country,

Director of Roads at Cork County Council, Padraig Barrett, says its crews have been working through the night finalising flood defences:

"So we've pumps on standby in Bantry, Dunmanway, Clonakilty, Skibbereen, Rosscarberry, Bandon, and Midleto. In North cork on the Blackwater River we have the flood defences erected in Mallow to Mode Three and in Fermoy to Mode Seven which are the highest levels in both towns. So that's an unprecedented move."

Crews from the City are on standby this morning after spending yesterday cleaning gullies and drains yesterday. 

Sand and gel bags are available from the City Council Depot at Anglesea Terrace and Tramore Valley Civic Amenity Site from 8am this morning

Director of Services at Cork City Council David Joyce, is appealing for people to use extreme caution: 

"We would ask people not to make unnecessary journeys, we would ask people not to enter flooded areas. Respecting the traffic signs and road closures and road diversions. This is a very significant event in Cork City, and we do encourage people and ask people, earnestly to take  personal responsibility for their own actions, and do not make unnecessary journeys."

Gardaí across Cork are warning motorists to use extreme caution on the road this morning. 

There are reports of excess surface water and high winds across the city and county. 

The Lee Road remains closed due to flooding and caution is needed in the Carrigrohane area also. 

There is spot flooding on the Innishannon side of Bandon on the N71 at the filling station. 

Gardaí say Longfield's Bridge close to Mallow Racecourse is also partially flooded. 

Meanwhile one unit of the Fire Service from Dunmanway is dealing with flooding at a property just outside Drimoleague village.
