LE Samuel Beckett rescues 40 migrants off Tripoli

The crew of the LÉ Samuel Beckett has rescued 40 people off the coast of Tripoli.

The Irish naval vessel is in the Mediterranean as part of efforts to deal with the numbers of people using the waterway as they flee war torn countries.

The rescue operation began at 11 o'clock this morning, and all migrants are now safely on board and are being brought to shore.

The LE Samuel Beckett departed Haulbowline in September and is expected to remain in the Mediterranean until the end of November.
