Local authorities could use drones to combat illegal dumping

Drones may soon be used by local authorities to monitor areas where illegal dumping is a problem.

A range of GDPR compliant technologies would be permitted to tackle the issue nationwide, under new legislation set to be drafted.

The Irish Council for Civil Liberties has expressed concerns about the proposals, saying they pose 'significant dangers' to people's privacy.

Labour Senator Mark Wall says local authorities are spending millions each year cleaning up the mess left behind by illegal dumpers.

"The cost which are mentioned in our own bill are close to €90m per year throughout our 31 local authorities, which wasn't contested by the government at the time.

"That's what's happening throughout the state at the moment. Some counties are spending up to €3m in clean up costs in relation to dumping."
